Functions of IGNOU
                         
 Indira Gandhi National Open University, known as IGNOU, is a Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, India-based Central University. Named after India's former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the university was founded in 1985 with a budget of approximately 20 million, after the Indian Parliament passed the 1985 Indira Gandhi National Open University Act (IGNOU Act 1985).[2] IGNOU is run by India's central government and has a total active enrollment of more than 4 million students.

Three distinct functions are envisaged for IGNOU under its Aet:

(1) Promotion of the open University and distance education systems
(2) Coordination and determination of standard of teaching, evaluation and research in such system

(3) Allocation and disbursal of grants to various distance education institution the country for the purpose of performing the above functions Besides, there are other pertinent functions of the Varsity. They are;

-Offer a wide spectrum of courses of studies in general, vocational and continuing education and life enrichment courses upto the pre-degree level.

- Offer degree, diploma, certificate and advance study programmes related to the needs of employment as necessary for building the economy of the country:

- Provide opportunities for higher education to a large cross-section of people, in particular the disadvantaged sections of society:

-Encourage an innovative system of University level education:

-Coordinate, promote, assess and accredit institutions and programme offered by ODL system as also to prevent through such measures as are considered appropriate institutions from offering sub-standard programmes and courses;
Develop need based curricular and self-learning materials for
() Open Basic Education (OBE), Secondary and Sr Secondary Education. and (ii) Vocational Education and Training (VET) programmes with a focus on skill development;

-Develop multi-media and multi-channel delivery modes for effective transaction of courseware

-Provide effective student support services to facilitate learners by setting study centres in our country and abroad.

-Conduct examinations and issue certificates to successful learners
